Horse & Groom: Family Pub Review

In this blog, local Nottingham food blogger @YummyByLiam shares his review of Horse & Groom in Moorgreen, Newthorpe, Nottingham (A Greene King Pub).

A Friday after school meal out is always a treat for the kids and symbolises that it is the weekend (or maybe I am speaking more on my behalf? Ha!) I don’t have children of my own, so I asked my cousin and her 2 young children to accompany – they were super excited to be eating out and couldn’t wait to hear what was on the menu!

Before The Meal

It was super easy to book a table at Horse & Groom – I did it via the Greene King app and received my email confirmation almost instantaneously. It was Friday at 5pm and the pub had a great atmosphere and many tables with children at too (they must have been on my wavelength of not cooking on a Friday!) When walking to the door, we were greeted with plenty of signage to direct us and explain their safety measures around covid-19 – this is very reassuring and helps the dining experience feel safer and more enjoyable from the very beginning.

We were then greeted by a door host who checked our booking and took us to our table. A couple of extra things to help you feel safer during your visit are the “I’m Clean” signs on the tables, disposable menus, cutlery delivered to your table and all staff wearing face shields/visors. Bonus points for providing the kids with colouring sheets and pens to keep them entertained.

Food Time!

The menu had lots of options, from pub classics to steaks and burgers etc. I think there are plenty of options that will suit all, including vegan options too – I saw the cauliflower wings as a starter and was super close to ordering them, but decided against it to avoid being too greedy! It was full table service, which I always like when going to a pub as it feels like a nicer service and experience. The kids had the “pick ‘n’ mix” meal option – you can choose a main + 2 veggies or main + veggie + side (the kids had roasted chicken breast with baked beans & chips and omega-3 fish fingers with mini corn on the cob & baked beans). I ordered the signature BBQ beef burger and my cousin ordered the 14-day-aged fillet steak with peppercorn sauce (both meals came with the accompanying sides)

The food came out in good time and the kids set out on their meals promptly. I think it is safe to say that they enjoyed it as both plates were as clean as a whistle by the time they were done!

The burger was good, and the onion rings and chips didn’t feel too greasy! A bit more of the BBQ beef burnt ends wouldn’t go amiss, but besides that it was great (plus a brioche bun always makes me happy). They also served ketchup, mayo etc in sachets in a little bucket so that is a winner!

The steak was a tad rarer than ordered but thankfully my cousin is totally cool with that. Again, all accompanying sides were well cooked and not greasy. The addition of pea shoots always makes me think something will be even nicer (maybe just me? Ha)

The kids, of course, had dessert – one fruit salad and one chocolate mania sundae. These were demolished quickly (apart from some of the fruit – chocolate always wins!)

Final Thoughts

Overall, this was a good, solid meal and we all felt safe and well looked after with the additional Covid-19 safety measures and friendly staff! I will be back again for sure!
